Memories of Mr Frank Barlow

Juniper, Cross InnBorn in the Midlands, Frank was called up at the beginning of the war - and, with
his brother, Arthur, joined the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal Service. portrait
This was extremely dangerous work - the Germans built booby traps into their bombs
to kill soldiers trying to disarm them - and changed the fuse mechanisms frequently.
Many of the Regiment were killed .

They had to dig down by hand and use timber salvaged from bombed out buildings to
shore up the trenches.

Frank and Arthur were allocated to separate units so that two men from the same
family should not be killed at the same time.

.

Frank survived his service in bomb disposal uninjured.

In 1943 Frank was posted to Burma to build camps for troops advancing against the
Japanese - taking charge of a company of Nigerian soldiers.

After the war he returned to his former work as a plumber.

Frasnk retired to Cross Inn about eighteen years ago - and is now in his nineties -
a resident at the Care Home in Aberaeron.
